Bangladeshi Birth Certificate Translation for UK Visa

Bangladesh has modernised birth registration through the BDRIS (Birth and Death Registration Information System). Even so, older paper certificates are still common. Whether you have a new online certificate or an old handwritten one, you need a certified translation from Bengali for a UK visa.

The UK has a very large Bangladeshi community, especially in cities such as London, Birmingham and Bradford. Bangladeshi nationals often apply for UK spouse visas, student visas, skilled worker visas and family settlement. Birth certificates matter in many of these applications. So it helps to know the different formats and what UKVI expects.

BDRIS: Bangladesh's New Digital Birth Registration System

Bangladesh brought in the BDRIS (জন্ম ও মৃত্যু নিবন্ধন তথ্য ব্যবস্থাপনা সিস্টেম) in the 2000s. BDRIS certificates carry labels in both Bengali and English. But the personal details, such as names, dates and addresses, are mostly in Bengali script. You still need a certified translation of that Bengali content, even though some headings are in English.

Types of Bangladeshi Birth Certificates

BDRIS Online Certificate (Modern)

Issued through the digital BDRIS system. It has English and Bengali fields and a QR code for checking. The personal details are in Bengali. You can download it from bdris.gov.bd. This is the preferred format for recent registrations.

City Corporation Certificate

In cities such as Dhaka and Chittagong, the City Corporation used to issue birth certificates. The layout varies, but it is usually in Bengali. Many older applicants have this type.

Union Parishad Certificate (Rural)

In the countryside, the local Union Parishad handled birth registration. It is the lowest level of local government. These certificates are in Bengali, often handwritten or typed. The layout changes from place to place and year to year.

Old Paper Certificate (Pre-BDRIS)

Certificates issued before BDRIS went digital are often handwritten in Bengali. The quality varies a lot. Older applicants usually have these. You may need to re-register through BDRIS to get a modern certificate.

Bengali (Bangla) Script

Bangladeshi birth certificates are written in Bengali, also called Bangla (বাংলা). Bengali uses an abugida script that comes from the ancient Brahmi script. It has about 50 letters. Bengali is one of the world's most spoken languages. Over 230 million people use it in Bangladesh and in the Indian state of West Bengal.

Bengali in Bangladesh differs a little from Bengali in India, especially West Bengal. The words and some habits vary, but the script is the same. Certified translators who focus on Bangladeshi papers know the terms and naming customs used in Bangladesh.

Common Name Discrepancy Issues

  • Father's name as middle name: In traditional Bangladeshi naming, the father's name comes after the given name. So Mohammad Rahman may have a son called Karim Mohammad Rahman. Here the father's name sits in the middle. Passport systems expect a simple first name and last name, so this can cause confusion.
  • Dates that differ between the NID and the birth certificate: Bangladesh's National ID (জাতীয় পরিচয়পত্র) database and birth certificates sometimes give different dates of birth for the same person. UKVI caseworkers know about this. Your translator will translate both documents exactly, and your cover letter should explain the difference.
  • Different English spellings: Bengali vowel sounds can be written in English in more than one way. The name রহিম can appear as Rahim or Rohim, depending on the system used. Your translator will match your passport spelling where possible.

Re-Registration and BDRIS Update

If you only have an old pre-BDRIS certificate, you can ask to have it re-registered in BDRIS and get a modern certified copy. You do this at the local government office where the birth was first registered, either the Union Parishad or the City Corporation. UKVI accepts the re-registered BDRIS certificate. It is also clearer and more standard, which makes it easier to translate.

BDRIS also runs an online checking service at bdris.gov.bd. Anyone can check a certificate there using its registration number. This helps show that your document is genuine during the visa process.

Frequently Asked Questions

My BDRIS certificate has English field labels. Does the Bengali content still need translation?

Yes. English labels do not remove the need for a translation. The real information is in Bengali script: names, dates, places and parents' details. UKVI needs a certified translation of that Bengali content, even if part of the form is in English.

My birth certificate date differs from my NID. Which should I use for my visa application?

Send both documents with certified translations. In your cover letter, point out the difference and explain it. Dates that differ between BDRIS and NID records are a common, well-known issue in Bangladesh, and UKVI caseworkers know about it. We usually suggest you use the birth certificate date as your main date of birth, because it was registered first.
