NADRA Documents
About NADRA
NADRA (National Database and Registration Authority) issues most identity and civil documents in Pakistan. NADRA documents are usually bilingual, in Urdu and English. Even so, the Urdu parts still need a certified translation for UKVI.
Common NADRA documents:
- • CNIC (Computerized National Identity Card)
- • NADRA Birth Certificate (B-Form for children)
- • NADRA Marriage Certificate
- • Family Registration Certificate (FRC)
- • Domicile Certificate
Right-to-Left Script (Nastaliq)
Urdu is written right to left in Nastaliq script, a form of the Persian-Arabic script. A professional translator must:
Script Expertise
Read the flowing Nastaliq calligraphy correctly. It is hard to read if Urdu is not your first language
Name Consistency
Match the exact spelling in your passport. For example, محمد can be written "Muhammad", "Mohammed" or "Muhammed"
Official Terminology
Use the right English words for Pakistani legal and government terms
Document Formatting
Keep the layout of the document while switching from right-to-left Urdu to left-to-right English

FAQs - Urdu/Pakistani Documents
Do Pakistani documents need attestation or apostille?
Pakistan joined the Hague Apostille Convention, in force from 9 March 2023. Pakistani documents now take an apostille from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This replaces the old chain of attestation plus British High Commission legalisation. For most UK visa applications, a certified translation on its own is enough. Check the UK Home Office rules for your visa type.
What is a Nikah Nama and why is it required?
A Nikah Nama (نکاح نامہ) is the Islamic marriage contract used in Pakistan. It is the legal proof of marriage, so spouse visa applications need it. Both the bride's copy and the groom's copy are valid. The whole document must be translated, including witness signatures and the terms agreed at the Nikah ceremony.
Are bilingual NADRA documents already in English?
NADRA documents have both Urdu and English text, but the Home Office still wants a certified translation of the whole document. There are three reasons. Some details appear only in Urdu. UKVI wants a certified translator to check the document independently. And someone must confirm that the Urdu matches the English.
What about documents from Azad Kashmir?
Documents from Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) follow the same rules as other Pakistani documents. Local councils and NADRA offices in AJK issue birth certificates, marriage certificates and other civil papers. Every Urdu part needs a certified translation.
Pakistan vs India: Urdu Document Differences
Urdu is an official language in both Pakistan and India. The documents, though, are very different. Knowing the difference matters for an accurate translation.
Pakistan
- • NADRA-issued computerised documents (bilingual Urdu/English)
- • Nikah Nama as the standard marriage certificate
- • B-Form for birth registration (children under 18)
- • Police Character Certificate from local police stations
- • Hague Apostille member since 9 March 2023 — apostille, not legalisation
India (Urdu-speaking regions)
- • State-level civil registries issue documents (varies by state)
- • Urdu common in UP, Bihar, Telangana, J&K, and Maharashtra
- • Marriage certificates from local municipal bodies or religious authorities
- • India joined the Hague Convention in 2005 — apostille available
- • Documents may combine Urdu, Hindi, and English on a single page
Urdu Translation Pricing
Certified Urdu translation costs £17.99 per page. Urdu uses the right-to-left Nastaliq script, so it needs a specialist translator. Most Pakistani visa applications need 4-8 documents translated. Standard delivery takes 24 hours. Rush delivery takes 8 hours.
Common UKVI Rejection Reasons for Urdu Documents
Name spelling mismatch
Urdu names can be spelled in English in several ways. For example, محمد can become Muhammad, Mohammed or Muhammed. The translation must match the spelling in the applicant's passport exactly.
Incomplete Nikah Nama translation
Some translators skip the terms and conditions part of the Nikah Nama. UKVI wants the whole document, including witness details and conditions (شرائط).
Missing NADRA bilingual content
NADRA documents do have some English text. Even so, UKVI expects a full certified translation of both the Urdu and the English, so it can check they match.
Date format confusion
Pakistani documents often show Islamic (Hijri) dates next to Gregorian dates. The translator must convert both and make each one clear.
Authentication & Legalisation
Pakistan has been a member of the Hague Apostille Convention since 9 March 2023. If your document needs more than a certified translation, here are the steps:
Get the original document from NADRA, your Union Council or the right Pakistani office
Get attestation from the Pakistan Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) in Islamabad
Legalisation by the British High Commission in Islamabad (if required by your visa type)
Get a certified English translation from a UKVI-compliant translation service
Important Note
For most standard UK visa applications, such as a spouse, visit or student visa, a certified translation is enough on its own. You usually only need legalisation for court cases, or when the Home Office asks for it directly.
Which UK Visa Types Require Urdu Document Translation?
Most Urdu documents in UK visa applications come from Pakistan. Indian applicants from Urdu-speaking areas send them too. Here are the four main visa routes that need certified Urdu translation:
Spouse / Partner Visa
This is the most common UK visa route for Pakistani applicants. You need certified translations of the Nikah Nama (marriage certificate), both partners' birth certificates and the CNIC (national ID card). Add any divorce certificates from earlier marriages. All the Urdu text must be translated in full.
Skilled Worker Visa
Pakistani nationals on this route need certified translations of their ID documents (CNIC or passport) and their qualifications (matric, FSc and degree certificates). Any professional licence in Urdu counts too. You also need a police character certificate if you have lived in Pakistan for 12 months or more.
Student Visa
Student visa applicants from Pakistan need certified translations of their academic transcripts and school certificates (Matric or O-Level equivalents). FSc or intermediate certificates count too. If family members come with you, you also need their birth certificates and CNIC translated.
Settlement (ILR) and Family Reunion
Settlement and family reunion routes need the biggest bundle of documents. That usually means birth certificates for every dependant, a Family Registration Certificate (FRC) from NADRA, your marriage certificate and a police character certificate. All of them need certified Urdu translation.
Authentication: Pakistan and India Compared
How you get an Urdu document authenticated depends on where it was issued. Pakistan and India signed up to different treaties, so the two routes are not the same.
Pakistan: Foreign Office (MOFA) Attestation
Pakistan has been a member of the Hague Apostille Convention since 9 March 2023. Pakistani documents can now get an apostille from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Documents legalised before that date under the old two-stage process are still valid:
- Attestation by the Pakistan Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) in Islamabad or at a regional office
- Legalisation by the British High Commission in Islamabad (required for some visa categories)
For most standard UK visa applications, a certified translation on its own is enough. You only need the full MOFA and British High Commission chain if the Home Office asks for it.
India: MEA Apostille (since 2023)
India joined the Hague Apostille Convention in 2005, in force from 14 July that year. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) can now apostille Indian Urdu documents. That covers birth certificates, marriage certificates and police certificates.
- Send the original document to the MEA Authentication Cell in New Delhi, or to a regional branch in Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Hyderabad or Chandigarh
- The MEA sticks on the apostille, usually within 1–3 working days
- Get a certified translation of the apostilled document to send to UKVI
You rarely need an apostille for a UK visa, because a certified translation meets UKVI standards. You may be asked for one for citizenship or for court cases.
Which Do You Need?
For almost every UK visa application, a certified translation is enough, whether your documents come from Pakistan or India. You only need MOFA attestation (Pakistan) or an MEA apostille (India) if the Home Office asks for it. The same applies if you apply for British citizenship, where documents are checked more closely.
