Tanzanian Documents Translation for UK Visa 2026
Tanzania issues most civil documents in Swahili. A few come in two languages. The mainland registry (RITA) and the Zanzibar registry are separate systems, and their documents look different. This guide explains which Tanzanian documents UKVI wants, when you need a translation, and how urban and rural records differ.
RITA (Registration Insolvency and Trusteeship Agency) runs civil registration on the mainland. Zanzibar has its own registry. Most Tanzanian civil documents are issued in Swahili, so you will need a certified translation for any UK visa application. Some newer documents have English labels. But the content that matters — names, dates, registry details, and stamps — is still in Swahili.
Zanzibar vs Mainland Tanzania: Two Registry Systems
Zanzibar (the islands of Unguja and Pemba) runs its own civil registry, apart from the mainland RITA system. Its documents look a little different and come from the Office of the Registrar General Zanzibar. So if you were born or married in Zanzibar, your papers come from that registry. UKVI accepts documents from both. Just make sure your translator knows both formats.
Key Tanzanian Documents for UK Visa Translation
Cheti cha Kuzaliwa (Birth Certificate)
Issued by RITA or the Zanzibar registry. The Swahili birth certificate shows the child's name, the date and place of birth, and the parents' names. Rural certificates often carry a late registration date, years after the birth. The translation should point that out. UKVI needs a certified Swahili-to-English translation.
Cheti cha Ndoa (Marriage Certificate)
RITA issues the civil marriage certificate once the marriage is registered. Islamic marriages are common in Zanzibar and along the coast. They may come with a separate nikah certificate, as well as the civil one or instead of it. Both need a certified translation from Swahili or Arabic into English.
National ID (Kitambulisho)
NIDA (the National Identification Authority) issues Tanzania's biometric national ID card. The card has some English on it. But the name, date of birth, and region fields may still be in Swahili. A certified translation confirms the whole content for UKVI.
Rural vs Urban Registration Gaps
Few births were registered in rural mainland Tanzania in the past. Many older applicants from regions such as Mbeya, Tabora, and Ruvuma have birth certificates issued years later, sometimes with an estimated date. Our translators flag these gaps clearly, so nothing confuses your UKVI caseworker.
Apostille for Tanzanian Documents
Tanzania joined the Hague Apostille Convention in 2023. You can get an apostille through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. An apostille proves a document is genuine for use abroad. It does not replace a certified English translation. If the document is in Swahili, you still need one.

Frequently Asked Questions
My Tanzanian birth certificate shows a registration date several years after my actual birth date. Will this cause problems with UKVI?
Late registration is very common on Tanzanian birth certificates, above all for people born in rural areas. UKVI caseworkers see it often. Your certified translator will show the registration date apart from the birth date, so the difference is clear. Send your passport too, since it should show the same birth date and backs up your claim.
I was married in Zanzibar under Islamic law. Does UKVI accept my nikah certificate?
Yes. UKVI recognises Islamic marriages held in Tanzania, including Zanzibar, where Islamic personal law applies. Send your nikah certificate with a certified Arabic-to-English translation. If the Zanzibar registry also issued a civil certificate, send that too, with a Swahili-to-English translation.
