Rwandan Documents Translation for UK Visa 2026
Rwanda has changed both its civil registration and its official language policy a lot since 1994. Older documents are in French or Kinyarwanda. Newer ones are more often in English and Kinyarwanda. Rwanda joined the Hague Apostille Convention in 2023. This guide explains which Rwandan documents UKVI asks for, and what to do if the 1994 genocide destroyed your records.
In Rwanda, the NCSR (National Center for Civil Registration) records births, marriages, and deaths. NIDA (National Identification Agency) handles national ID. Most documents from before 1994 are in French, and some are in Kinyarwanda. Documents issued after 1994 more often use both Kinyarwanda and English. That is because Rwanda made English an official language in 2008, alongside Kinyarwanda and French.
Impact of the 1994 Genocide on Records
The 1994 genocide against the Tutsi destroyed civil registry records in many communes. So many Rwandan applicants simply cannot get a pre-1994 birth or marriage certificate. The originals no longer exist. UKVI knows this and has a way to deal with missing papers from that time. If your records were destroyed, explain this fully in your covering letter. Send any other evidence you have, such as survivor testimonies or a replacement certificate issued by the NCSR after the genocide.
Key Rwandan Documents for UK Visa Translation
Acte de Naissance / Ingando (Birth Certificate)
Birth certificates from before 1994 are in French (acte de naissance). Later ones are usually in Kinyarwanda, and the newest may have English sections too. All of them need a certified translation. If your record was destroyed in the genocide, you can apply to the NCSR for a replacement certificate.
Icyemezo cy'Ukwakwa (Marriage Certificate)
The NCSR issues Rwandan civil marriage certificates. Older ones, from before 2000, are in French. Newer ones are in Kinyarwanda, or in both Kinyarwanda and English. All of them need a certified translation for a UKVI spouse visa application.
NIDA National ID Card
NIDA issues Rwanda's biometric national ID card in Kinyarwanda and English. Some of it is already in English, but the Kinyarwanda fields still need a certified translation so UKVI can read every part. The card shows the holder's full name, date of birth, ID number, and province of origin.
Apostille via Rwanda in 2023
Rwanda joined the Hague Apostille Convention in 2023. So the Ministry of Foreign Affairs can now apostille Rwandan documents. This makes authentication easier for UK visa applications. You still need a certified translation as well.

Frequently Asked Questions
My pre-1994 birth certificate was destroyed in the genocide. Can I still apply for a UK visa?
Yes. The NCSR issues replacement birth certificates when records were destroyed in 1994. If you have a replacement, send it with a certified Kinyarwanda-to-English translation. If you cannot get one, write a full covering letter explaining why. Send other proof of identity too, such as your passport, your NIDA national ID, or your school records.
My Rwandan marriage certificate is in French. Do I need both a French and Kinyarwanda translator?
If the whole certificate is in French, a certified French-to-English translation is enough. Certificates issued after 2000 often have Kinyarwanda sections as well. In that case the translator covers both languages in one certified translation.
