Russian Divorce Certificate Translation for UK Visa
Applying for a UK spouse visa after a Russian divorce? This guide covers Russian divorce documents, ZAGS registry certificates, court judgments, apostille rules, and how to get UKVI-accepted certified translations.
Russia has a clear civil registration system for divorce. All Russian divorce documents are in Russian, so UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) needs a certified English translation with them. The document you hold depends on how you divorced: by mutual consent, or through the courts. So the translation you need differs too.
UKVI and Russian Divorce Documents
UKVI needs certified English translations of every foreign-language divorce document you send with a spouse visa, partner visa, or settlement application. Russian divorce certificates from ZAGS must be translated in full, not just the main fields. The same goes for court judgments. That means the header, court name, parties' details, grounds, and operative clause.
Russian Divorce Documents: Types and Sources
Russia handles divorce in two ways. Each one produces a different document:
Свидетельство о расторжении брака (Divorce Certificate from ZAGS)
This is the standard Russian divorce certificate. ZAGS (ЗАГС — Запись актов гражданского состояния, the civil registration office) issues it once it has registered the end of the marriage. That happens after a mutual consent (по обоюдному согласию) divorce for couples with no minor children, or after ZAGS records a court divorce judgment. The certificate is one page in a standard state format, printed on official paper with a state emblem and a ZAGS seal.
Судебное решение о расторжении брака (Court Divorce Judgment)
The court issues this one. Most divorces go to the мировой судья (magistrate court). Contested cases about children or property go to the районный суд (district court). You need this route if either spouse has minor children, or if the couple cannot agree. The judgment runs to several pages. Once it is final, either party takes it to ZAGS to get the ZAGS divorce certificate.
What UKVI Typically Requires
For most UK visa applications, the translated ZAGS divorce certificate is enough. But if UKVI has questions about the case, or about whether the divorce is final, it may also ask for a translated court judgment. Sending both, if you have them, gives you the strongest evidence.
The ZAGS Registry System
ZAGS (ЗАГС) is the Russian civil registry. It works like a register office in the UK. It records births, marriages, deaths, divorces, and name changes. Every district in Russia has a ZAGS office. When a divorce is final, whether through ZAGS or through a court, ZAGS registers it and gives each party an official divorce certificate.
The ZAGS divorce certificate shows the full names of both spouses, their dates of birth, the date the marriage ended, the reason it ended (court decision or mutual consent), the ZAGS office name, and the registration number. Every one of these fields must be translated for UKVI.
| Divorce Route | Who Can Use It | Documents Produced |
|---|---|---|
| Mutual consent (по обоюдному согласию) | Both agree, no minor children, no property dispute | ZAGS divorce certificate only |
| Court divorce (судебный развод) | There are minor children, one spouse objects, or assets are complex | Court judgment + ZAGS certificate (after registration) |
Russia and the Apostille Convention
Russia is a member of the Hague Apostille Convention. So Russian civil documents, including ZAGS divorce certificates, can be apostilled for use abroad. The regional civil registration authority adds the apostille to a ZAGS document. For court documents, the relevant court administration does it.
Sanctions and Consular Challenges
Since 2022, it has been harder to get documents from Russia. Sanctions and the pause on some consular services are the reason. The Russian Embassy in London still offers some civil registration services to Russian nationals, but delays are long. If you cannot get your papers the normal way, an immigration adviser can suggest other evidence or a statutory declaration. If you already hold your Russian divorce certificate, certified translation can start straight away whatever the political situation.
Surname Changes After Divorce
Surname changes cause many problems with Russian divorce documents. In Russia, a spouse who took the other's surname on marriage can go back to their birth surname on divorce. ZAGS records that change. If your divorce certificate shows a different surname from your passport, the translator must point this out clearly.
The ZAGS certificate may show your married surname, while your passport shows your birth surname. UKVI needs to follow the trail from one name to the other. So you may also need to translate a name change certificate (свидетельство о перемене имени), or a note added to the divorce certificate.

Frequently Asked Questions
My Russian divorce was "by mutual consent" — do I still need a court judgment translated?
No. In a mutual consent divorce, both parties agree, there are no minor children, and no property is in dispute. ZAGS handles it directly, with no court involved. So you will only have a ZAGS divorce certificate, and no court judgment exists. In most cases the translated ZAGS certificate is enough for UKVI.
Can I get my Russian divorce documents apostilled from the UK given current sanctions?
Only the Russian authorities can add an apostille, and they must do it in Russia. You cannot get one from the UK. If you already hold a ZAGS divorce certificate without an apostille, UKVI will usually accept a certified translation on its own. To get a new apostilled copy, you need help from contacts in Russia or from the Russian consulate. Consular services are disrupted right now, so expect long delays.
