Mozambican Documents Translation for UK Visa 2026

Mozambican documents are in Portuguese, so they need a certified English translation for UK visa applications. Mozambique is not in the Apostille Convention, so documents must go through a legalisation chain instead. This guide covers civil registry documents, how to get copies, and what to do about missing records.

Mozambique is a Portuguese-speaking country in southeast Africa. More and more Mozambican nationals now live in the United Kingdom. Mozambican civil documents are written in Portuguese, so UK visa applications need a certified English translation of each one. The Mozambican civil registration system and the legalisation rules are very different from those in Europe. That is why you should plan well ahead.

Mozambique Is NOT in the Apostille Convention

Unlike Portugal or Brazil, Mozambique has not joined the Hague Apostille Convention. Angola has not joined either, so Angolan documents follow a similar legalisation route. So Mozambican documents cannot be apostilled. For a UK visa, they must go through the older legalisation chain instead: Ministry of Justice in Mozambique → UK High Commission in Maputo. This takes longer and involves more steps than getting an apostille.

Key Mozambican Civil Documents for UK Visa

Certidão de Nascimento (Birth Certificate)

The Conservatória do Registo Civil — the civil registry office — issues Mozambican birth certificates. The certidão de nascimento shows the birth, the child's full name, the parents' names, the date and place of birth, and the registration reference. You need a certified translation of it for any UK visa application that asks for proof of identity or family links.

Certidão de Casamento (Marriage Certificate)

The Conservatória do Registo Civil issues this once a civil or religious marriage is registered. It shows both spouses' names, the date and place of the marriage, and the registration details. You need it for a UK spouse visa if you married in Mozambique.

Bilhete de Identidade (BI — National Identity Card)

This is the Mozambican national identity card. Visa applications usually rely on a passport, but you may also need a translated BI as extra proof of identity. The BI shows the holder's name, date of birth, place of birth and identity number. If you send it with a UK visa application, it needs a certified translation.

The Conservatória do Registo Civil

Mozambique's civil registry works through Conservatórias do Registo Civil (civil registry offices). You find them in provincial capitals and larger towns. Each Conservatória keeps the registry for its own area. Angola uses the Conservatória too, but some of its naming rules differ. The Mozambican system keeps the same wording as the Portuguese civil registry tradition.

To get a certified copy of a civil registration document, you or your representative must contact the Conservatória in the district where the event was registered. National databases do not cover older records well, especially records from rural areas or from the civil war years.

The Legalisation Chain for Mozambican Documents

Mozambique is not in the Apostille Convention. So documents for UK use must go through the older legalisation process:

1

Obtain Certified Copy from Conservatória

Request a certified true copy from the civil registry office where the event was registered.

2

Legalisation by Ministry of Justice (Mozambique)

The Ministry of Justice in Mozambique (Ministério da Justiça) checks and stamps the document. This confirms the signature and seal of the office that issued it.

3

UK High Commission Maputo

The UK High Commission in Maputo, or an approved legalisation service, then legalises the Ministry of Justice stamp. This confirms it is genuine for use in the UK.

4

Certified Translation

Once the document is legalised, get a certified English translation of the whole thing. The translation must be complete and accurate, and it must come with a translator's certification statement.

Civil War Record Gaps (1977–1992)

Mozambique's civil war (1977–1992) badly disrupted civil registration across much of the country. Many rural Conservatória offices were destroyed, and records were lost. If you were born in Mozambique during or before the war, your birth may never have been registered. The records may also no longer exist. This is most common in rural areas and places hit by the fighting. In these cases, a sworn declaration (declaração) or a late registration may be your only option. If you cannot get the standard civil registry documents, ask an immigration solicitor what other evidence you can use.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does my Mozambican document need to be legalised before translation?

For UK visa applications, what UKVI needs first is a certified translation. UKVI does not always ask for legalisation by the Ministry of Justice and the UK High Commission. But legalisation makes a document much more convincing. That matters with Mozambican documents, which caseworkers may see less often. For important applications, such as a spouse visa or ILR, it is best to get the legalised copy first and then order the translation.

My Mozambican birth was never registered — what can I do?

If you were born in Mozambique but never registered, you may be able to apply for a late registration (registo tardio). You do this through the Conservatória do Registo Civil in Mozambique. You will need witness statements and other supporting evidence. If you cannot get a birth certificate, speak to an immigration solicitor in the UK. They can advise on what else UKVI may accept. Some applicants use sworn declarations or other identity documents.
