Lebanese Document Translation for UK Visa: Complete Guide
A guide for Lebanese applicants who need to translate civil registry papers, religious court records, family books, and school or university certificates. It covers UK Skilled Worker, Spouse, Student, and family reunion applications, in both Arabic and French.
Lebanon keeps records in an unusual way. Civil status is tracked in two places: the Lebanese central civil registry, and the recognised religious (confessional) courts. Documents often carry both Arabic and French. This comes from the French mandate, and Lebanese offices still work this way. For a UK visa, every Arabic and French part must be certified-translated into English.
Arabic and French on the Same Document
Lebanese civil registry documents, passports, and older school certificates often carry both Arabic and French text. So the certified translator must work from both languages into English. A good UK translation service will give your document to a translator who reads both. They then put both sections into English in one certified package.

Ikhraj Qaid: Lebanon's Master Civil Registry Document
The ikhraj qaid is the core civil status document for every Lebanese citizen. It comes in two forms:
Ikhraj Qaid Individual
- Single person civil record
- Shows birth, marriage and divorce notes
- Required for most UK applications
- Typically 1 page
Ikhraj Qaid 'A'ili (Family)
- Full family record
- Lists spouse, children, parents
- A must for family reunion
- Often 1–3 pages
Always ask for a recent ikhraj qaid, issued in the last 6 months. UKVI caseworkers want your civil status as it is now. An older extract may miss a recent marriage, divorce, or birth.
Religious vs Civil Marriage in Lebanon
Lebanon has no civil marriage for Lebanese nationals living in Lebanon. Marriages are carried out by recognised religious authorities. There are 18 confessional courts, serving the various Christian, Muslim, and Druze communities. Each one has its own layout, its own Arabic wording, and its own way of issuing papers. For UKVI:
- Religious marriage certificates are accepted as valid if they are registered with the Lebanese civil registry, which means they appear on your ikhraj qaid.
- Your certified translation should name the exact religious authority — for example, the Maronite Catholic Patriarchate, the Sunni Shari'a Court, or the Greek Orthodox Metropolitanate — and keep the original wording.
- Lebanese civil marriages held abroad, such as in Cyprus, are registered separately and are often easier to process.
Lebanese Baccalaureate and University Degrees
Lebanese students get the Baccalauréat Libanais (Lebanese Baccalaureate) at the end of secondary school. It usually carries both Arabic and French, and it must be translated in full for UK Student and Skilled Worker visas. University degrees come from the Lebanese University, AUB, LAU, and others. The language depends on the university — Arabic, French, or English:
Translation by University
- AUB / LAU — usually in English. No translation needed unless the document has Arabic on it.
- USJ — usually in French. Translation needed.
- Lebanese University — usually Arabic with French. Translation needed.
Lebanese Apostille and Legalisation
Lebanon is not a party to the Hague Apostille Convention. If a document needs legalising for use abroad, it goes through these steps:
- Authentication by the Lebanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Beirut
- Further authentication by the right embassy — the British Embassy in Beirut, or the FCDO in the UK
- Certified translation into English (after authentication)
Most UK visa applications do not need legalisation. A certified translation by a UK-based translator is enough. Check with your solicitor or translation provider before you pay for legalisation.
Frequently Asked Questions
My Lebanese passport has both Arabic and French on the biographic page. Do I need to translate it?
Usually no. Lebanese passports already spell your details in English. But any Arabic or French notes, visa stamps, or changes inside the passport may need translation if they matter to your application.
Can a French-only document be used for UK visa purposes without Arabic?
Yes. Lebanese documents first issued only in French are fully valid. You just need a qualified translator to translate them from French into English.
How do I handle names that appear differently in Arabic and French on the same document?
Your translator will keep both spellings and point out where they differ. Use the spelling on your current passport as the main one throughout your UK application.
Do I need separate translations for Arabic and French sections, or one combined translation?
One combined certified translation. A translator who reads both languages puts both sections into English in one document. Translator's notes then show which parts were Arabic and which were French.
What does Lebanese document translation cost?
£17.99 per page for standard 24-hour delivery. Documents in two languages may cost a little more, because the translator needs both. The individual ikhraj qaid is 1 page. The family version is usually 1–3 pages.
