Hong Kong Documents Translation for UK Visa 2026

Most Hong Kong civil documents are bilingual, in Chinese and English. Some are in Chinese only. The HKID card, birth certificates, and marriage certificates each have their own translation rules for UK visa and BN(O) applications.

Since the National Security Law and the wave of emigration that followed, the UK has processed tens of thousands of British National (Overseas) visa applications from Hong Kong residents. Most BN(O) applicants must send Hong Kong civil documents as part of their evidence. Many of those documents are bilingual. But the Chinese text — above all the Chinese names on HKID cards and on some birth records — may still need a certified translation, so that UKVI can identify you.

Hong Kong Joined the Apostille Convention in 2024

Hong Kong SAR has been covered by the Hague Apostille Convention for decades — since 1965, and continuously after the 1997 handover. This is separate from Mainland China, for which the Convention only came into force on 7 November 2023. So Hong Kong public documents, including civil registry documents, can be apostilled by the High Court of Hong Kong. You no longer need the full consular legalisation chain. Any older document that was legalised through the UK Consulate-General Hong Kong is still valid.

Key Hong Kong Documents for UK Visa Applications

Birth Certificate (出生登記)

Issued by the Immigration Department of HKSAR (ImmD). It comes in both Chinese and English. But Chinese names often appear only in Chinese characters. You may need a translation to show the name matches the one in your passport.

Marriage Certificate (結婚登記)

Issued by the Marriage Registry, in Chinese and English. The Chinese name fields and the signature sections may hold text in Chinese only. Translate that content to meet UKVI rules in full.

HKID Card (香港身份證)

The Hong Kong Identity Card is bilingual, but the Chinese name (漢字姓名) is a key field. UKVI has to check that this name matches your identity on your other documents. If there is any difference, a certified translation confirming how the Chinese name is spelled in English matters a great deal.

BN(O) Passport

Issued by the UK government in English, so it needs no translation. But documents that prove your BN(O) status or your past residence in Hong Kong may be in Chinese, and those do need translation.

Traditional vs Simplified Chinese Script

This is an important distinction for translators handling Hong Kong documents:

Script TypeUsed InTranslation Notes
Traditional Chinese (繁體字)Hong Kong, Macau, TaiwanAll Hong Kong civil documents use Traditional Chinese. Check that your translator works in Traditional Chinese.
Simplified Chinese (简体字)Mainland China, SingaporeUsed in PRC documents. It is a different character set from Traditional Chinese, so do not mix the two up when you brief a translator.

BN(O) Visa: When Translation Is Needed

The BN(O) visa route lets Hong Kong BN(O) passport holders and their eligible family members live, work, and study in the UK. It also leads to settlement. For a BN(O) application, these documents may need certified translation:

  • Birth certificate: Needed to prove BN(O) status for family members. Any fields in Chinese must be translated.
  • Marriage certificate: Needed for spouse applicants. Any content in Chinese must be translated.
  • Child’s birth certificate: Needed for child dependant applications. It is bilingual, but the Chinese-name fields are worth confirming with a translation.
  • Chinese-language supporting documents: Any letter, employment record, or bank document in Chinese needs a certified translation.

Frequently Asked Questions

My Hong Kong birth certificate is bilingual. Does UKVI need a translation of the English part or just the Chinese part?

If every part of the document appears in both languages, UKVI may simply read the English. But sometimes the Chinese name (漢字姓名) has no English version on the document. In that case, get a certified translation that confirms the Chinese name and its English spelling. It prevents questions about name differences later.

Does the 2024 Apostille Convention extension cover documents issued before 2024?

The Apostille Convention applies to documents issued from the date Hong Kong’s accession took effect in 2024. Older documents that were already legalised through the UK Consulate-General are still valid. If you order a fresh copy of an older record — say a new certified copy in 2025 of a 1990 birth certificate — you should be able to use the apostille route.
