Gambian Documents Translation for UK Visa 2026

Gambia's official language is English, but UKVI still needs a certified translation of civil registry documents. Gambia is not in the Apostille Convention. Common problems include late birth registration, births in villages, and kadi court Muslim marriage certificates sitting alongside civil registry records.

For its size, The Gambia has one of the biggest diaspora communities in the world. Tens of thousands of Gambians live in the United Kingdom. They apply for spouse visas, family settlement, skilled worker visas, and student visas. English is the official language of The Gambia. Even so, civil registry documents are formal legal records, and UKVI needs a certified translation of them. Gambia is also not yet a member of the Hague Apostille Convention, so documents still need the full legalisation chain. The Gambian National Assembly ratified the Convention in June 2026. So check the current position before you start — once it takes effect, an apostille may replace the chain.

Gambia is NOT in the Apostille Convention

The Gambia has not joined the Hague Apostille Convention. So documents for a UK visa must go through the legalisation chain. First the relevant Gambian ministry or authority authenticates them. Then the UK High Commission in Banjul legalises them. Start this well before your visa application date, because processing times vary.

The Registrar General's Department

The Registrar General's Department runs civil registration in The Gambia. It sits under the Ministry of Justice. The Registrar General keeps the official registers of births, deaths, and marriages across the country. If you need a document abroad, get a certified copy from the Registrar General's Department in Banjul.

Note that the Gambia Revenue Authority (GRA) is the tax authority and does not handle civil registration — if you see it named in that context, the reference is wrong. Gambian nationals in the UK can order documents through the Gambian High Commission in London. It offers consular services, including help with civil registry documents.

Late Registration and Village/Compound Births

Many Gambian births were never entered in the formal civil registry at the time. This is most common for births in rural areas, villages, or family compounds. Birth registration in The Gambia is patchy, above all for older generations. That makes it a real hurdle for visa applicants.

Late Birth Registration

You can register a birth late in The Gambia, months or even years after it happened. A late-registered birth certificate is legally valid. You can use it for a UK visa, as long as it is legalised and certified translated. UKVI knows that late registration is common in West Africa. It will look at a late-registered certificate along with your other evidence.

Affidavit or Sworn Declaration

If there is no civil registry birth certificate, you can use a sworn affidavit as supporting evidence. It must be sworn before a commissioner for oaths or a magistrate. This route is common for older Gambians born before full civil registration began. The affidavit must be legalised and certified translated.

Supporting Evidence

If there is no formal registration record, UKVI may accept extra proof of birth. School leaving certificates, baptism records, hospital records, and Islamic naming ceremony records can all help. Any document that is not in English needs a certified translation. Even English documents from foreign civil authorities may need one.

Kadi Court Muslim Marriage Certificates

The Gambia is mainly Muslim, at roughly 95% of the population, so Islamic marriages are common. The country runs two marriage registers side by side. Civil marriages go to the Registrar General's Department. Islamic marriages go to the Cadi Court, also spelled "Kadi Court".

Civil vs. Kadi Court Marriages

  • The civil marriage certificate from the Registrar General is the main legal document, and UKVI accepts it directly
  • Kadi court marriage certificates are Islamic marriage records. They are legally valid in The Gambia under the Mohammedan Marriage Act
  • Kadi court certificates may carry Arabic notes next to the English text. Both parts need certified translation
  • UKVI accepts Kadi court marriage certificates as evidence of marriage for spouse visa applications
  • If you had both a civil and a Kadi marriage, sending both certificates makes your evidence stronger

Many Gambian couples have both an Islamic ceremony, recognised by the Kadi court, and a civil registration with the Registrar General. The civil certificate is the one that carries legal weight. But sending both, with their certified translations, proves the marriage from more than one official source.

The Gambian Community in the United Kingdom

Most Gambians in the UK live in London, above all in the boroughs of Newham, Tower Hamlets, and Hackney. There are also sizeable communities in Birmingham and other big cities. Many Gambians arrived from the 1980s onwards. Large waves came after political and economic changes at home. The community keeps close ties with The Gambia, and money sent home is still an important part of the Gambian economy.

Frequently Asked Questions

My Gambian marriage was registered with the Kadi court but not with the Registrar General. Is this accepted by UKVI?

Yes. UKVI accepts Kadi court marriage certificates as proof of a valid Islamic marriage in The Gambia. Kadi court registration is legally valid under Gambian law, in the Mohammedan Marriage and Divorce Act. If you can, also register the marriage with the civil Registrar General and get a civil marriage certificate. That gives you two forms of proof. The certified translation of the Kadi certificate must cover every word, including any Arabic notes.

My birth was never formally registered in The Gambia. What can I submit to UKVI?

If your birth was never registered, you can apply for late registration at the Registrar General's Department. Bring supporting evidence such as naming ceremony records, school records, or hospital records. Another route is a sworn affidavit before a magistrate, backed by witness statements from family members or community elders. Every document must be legalised, and any document not in English must come with a certified translation for UKVI. We also strongly advise a covering letter from a solicitor or immigration adviser explaining your registration situation.
