Dutch Documents Translation for UK Visa 2026
Dutch civil documents are written in Dutch. They come from your local council (gemeente) and the BRP system. The Netherlands is in the Apostille Convention, and Dutch nationals in the UK can apply for EUSS status. The documents people send most often are the geboorteakte, huwelijksakte, and uittreksel BRP.
Many Dutch people live in the United Kingdom. Dutch nationals are one of the largest EU groups here, and many have lived and worked in Britain for decades. Dutch civil documents are written in Dutch and issued by a well-run council system. Every Dutch document needs a certified English translation for UKVI, the EU Settlement Scheme, and other Home Office purposes.
Netherlands Is in the Apostille Convention
The Netherlands has been a member of the Hague Apostille Convention since it began in 1965. So Dutch official documents can be apostilled. This means a Dutch court or the Ministry of Justice adds an apostille stamp to show the document is genuine. But UKVI does not normally ask for apostilles on Dutch documents in standard visa categories. Certified translation is the main UKVI requirement. You can still get an apostille for extra peace of mind on important documents.

The BRP: Basisregistratie Personen
The Basisregistratie Personen (BRP) is the Dutch Municipal Population Register. It is the central database of everyone who lives in the Netherlands, both Dutch nationals and registered foreign residents. Every Dutch council keeps its own part of the BRP. It records births, deaths, marriages, divorces, and address changes.
An uittreksel BRP (BRP extract) is one of the documents asked for most often in Dutch visa applications. It is an official extract from the council population register. It shows your current registered details: name, date of birth, nationality, and past addresses. For UKVI applications, the uittreksel BRP can prove your personal details or where you live.
What the Uittreksel BRP Contains
- Full name, date of birth, and place of birth
- Nationality and Dutch BSN (citizen service number)
- Civil status (single, married, divorced, widowed)
- Current address and historical addresses
- Registered family relationships (parents, spouse, children)
The BSN Number
The Burgerservicenummer (BSN) is the Dutch citizen service number. It is a unique nine-digit number given to everyone who lives in the Netherlands. It appears on ID documents, tax papers, the uittreksel BRP, and many other official Dutch documents. When a document with a BSN is translated, the translation should keep the number and explain that it is the Dutch citizen service number.
EUSS Applications for Dutch Nationals
Dutch nationals who lived in the UK before 31 December 2020 could get pre-settled or settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme (EUSS). Family members who want to join a Dutch EUSS holder in the UK must apply for an EUSS Family Permit. That application needs certified translations of the Dutch civil documents.
Obtaining Dutch Documents from Abroad
Dutch nationals living in the UK can get geboorteaktes and uittreksels from the council where they were born or last registered. You can also use the Dutch Embassy/Consulate in London. Many Dutch councils now let you order certified documents online.
Dutch Documents in English
The Netherlands is a very multilingual country and many Dutch officials speak excellent English. But official civil documents are always issued in Dutch, whatever language you prefer. You always need a certified English translation for UKVI.
Dutch Naming Conventions
Dutch names work differently from names in many other countries. These differences can change how your name looks on documents:
No Patronymics
Dutch names do not use patronymics, unlike many Eastern European, Russian, and Arabic naming systems. A Dutch name has one given name (or several) and a surname. Sometimes there is a tussenvoegsel (prefix) in between.
Tussenvoegsel (Name Prefix)
Many Dutch surnames include a tussenvoegsel. This is a prefix such as "van," "de," "van de," "van den," or "van der." One example is "Willem van der Berg." The tussenvoegsel is part of the legal surname, so the translation must keep it. It is usually written in lower case in a full name. It may be capitalised when the surname is used without the first name.
Double-Barrelled Surnames
Double-barrelled surnames are common in the Netherlands. They often appear after a marriage where both partners join their surnames. They should be translated exactly as they appear on the document.

Frequently Asked Questions
My Dutch name includes "van der" — must this be included in the translation?
Yes. The tussenvoegsel (a name prefix like "van der," "de," or "van") is a legal part of the Dutch surname. The certified translation must keep it exactly. It must appear just as it does on the source document. If you drop it, the legal spelling of your name changes. That can cause identity problems in your visa application.
Can I use a uittreksel BRP as proof of relationship for an EUSS Family Permit?
Yes. Once translated into English, a uittreksel BRP from the right Dutch council can show family relationships. For example, it can show that a child's parent is the EUSS holder. But if a child applies through a parent's EUSS status, a geboorteakte (birth certificate) that names the parent is stronger proof. Use the uittreksel BRP as extra support alongside the birth certificate.
