Driving Instructor ADI Registration Translation UK
To work in the UK, an overseas driving instructor must register as an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) with the DVSA. The DVSA runs its own qualification process. Even so, you need certified translations of some foreign documents for your application. Driving licence history and past qualifications matter most.
The UK DVSA (Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency) makes every driving instructor pass the ADI qualification process. Your overseas experience does not change this. You still need translations of your overseas driving licence and instructor qualifications. They form part of the DVSA application and the wider UK visa process if you are moving here to teach.
ADI Registration: UK-Only Qualification
Great Britain does not recognise overseas driving instructor qualifications for ADI registration. Every applicant must pass the DVSA's three-part ADI qualifying examination. That is true whatever your country or your existing qualifications. The three parts are: (1) Theory test, (2) Hazard perception test, and (3) Practical driving ability test and instructional ability test. You can mention your overseas qualifications and experience. They do not let you skip any part of the process.
Documents Requiring Translation for ADI Registration
Foreign Driving Licence
To apply for ADI registration, you must hold a valid full UK driving licence. To swap a foreign licence for a UK one, DVLA usually asks for a certified translation if the licence is not in English. Do this first if you have not yet exchanged your licence.
Overseas Driving Record / Licence History
DVLA and DVSA may ask for a certificate of entitlement or licence history from your home country. It confirms your driving history, any endorsements, and the licence classes you have held. If it is in another language, you need a certified translation.
Overseas Driving Instructor Qualification
Overseas instructor qualifications do not let you skip the ADI process. Still, you may want to send them as evidence of your experience. If the certificate is in another language, DVSA assessors need a certified translation to read it.
Criminal Record Certificate (for DBS purposes)
ADI applicants must declare criminal convictions. If you lived abroad in the 5 years before you apply, you may need an overseas criminal record certificate from that country. If it is in another language, you need a certified translation.
Driving Licence Exchange: Before ADI Registration
To register as an ADI, you must hold a full UK or Northern Ireland driving licence. If you hold an overseas licence, you must exchange it for a UK one first. The exchange process differs by country:
| Country Group | Exchange Arrangement | Translation Required? |
|---|---|---|
| EU / EEA (pre-Brexit) | Direct exchange (1-for-1) | Usually not (English visible) |
| Designated countries (e.g. Australia, Canada, Japan, USA) | Direct exchange | Usually not (English) |
| Non-designated countries | Must pass UK driving test | Yes (for application documents) |
| Non-Latin script countries | Varies by arrangement | Yes (certified translation required) |
Visa Route for Overseas Driving Instructors
To work as a driving instructor in the UK, you need a visa that allows work. ADI work can be sponsored under the Skilled Worker visa route (SOC code 3557 — Driving Instructors and Driving Examiners). A UK employer, such as a driving school, must sponsor the visa. The Skilled Worker application also needs certified translations of your identity documents and qualifications if they are not in English.

Frequently Asked Questions
I am a driving instructor from India. Can I teach driving in the UK with my Indian qualifications?
No. Great Britain does not recognise Indian driving instructor qualifications for ADI registration. You must pass the full DVSA ADI qualification process. The good news is that you can exchange your Indian driving licence for a UK one, because India is on the designated country list. That removes one barrier. You then need to pass all three parts of the ADI qualifying examination before you can teach in the UK.
Does my overseas driving licence need to be translated for DVLA exchange?
It depends on the language and the country. Licences that include English, or come from English-speaking designated countries, usually need no translation. Licences in a non-Latin script (Arabic, Chinese, Russian, and so on) need a certified translation before DVLA can process the exchange. Contact DVLA to check the rules for your country and licence type.
