Dominican Republic Documents Translation for UK Visa 2026
The JCE (Junta Central Electoral) issues Dominican civil documents in Spanish. UK visa applications need certified English translations of them. This guide covers actas, apostille, and common document problems.
The Dominican Republic is a Spanish-speaking Caribbean country. Many Dominicans live in the United Kingdom. If you are a Dominican national applying for a UK visa, you must supply certified English translations of every Spanish-language civil document issued in the Dominican Republic. This applies to spouse visas, family reunion, student, and work visas.
JCE: The Single Civil Registry Authority
The JCE (Junta Central Electoral) is the only civil registry authority in the Dominican Republic. It handles births, marriages, deaths, and national identity. Only the JCE issues civil registration documents (actas). In many countries, local town halls handle registration. In the Dominican Republic, the JCE is one national body with offices across the country.
Key Dominican Republic Documents for UK Visa
Acta de Nacimiento (Birth Certificate)
Issued by JCE. Dominican birth certificates are book-entry certificates (actas del registro civil). The birth is written into a registry book, and the extract you get is a certified copy of that entry. It shows the full name, date and place of birth, parents' names, and JCE registration details. UKVI applications need a certified translation.
Acta de Matrimonio (Marriage Certificate)
Issued by JCE after a civil or church marriage is registered. It shows both spouses' names, the date and place of marriage, the witnesses, and the JCE registration number. This is the key document for a UK spouse visa when there is a past or current Dominican marriage.
Cédula de Identidad y Electoral (National ID)
The Dominican national identity card. It carries the holder's DUI (Documento Único de Identidad) number. Most people send a passport as proof of identity. Even so, a translated cédula can help as a supporting document, or if you have changed your name. The JCE issues the cédula alongside civil registration records.
The Multiple Actas Issue
Dominican civil documents raise one common problem. Two copies of the same birth certificate (acta de nacimiento), taken out at different times, can show slightly different details. This happens when corrections or margin notes are added to the registry after the first entry. If your copies differ, use the most recent certified copy from JCE. It shows any corrections.
UKVI may ask questions if you send two actas with different details. It helps if the translator notes any annotations or corrections on the document. That way, the caseworker can see why the copies differ.
Dominican Republic and the Apostille Convention
The Dominican Republic belongs to the Hague Apostille Convention. You can get Dominican civil documents apostilled through the JCE. The JCE even runs an online apostille service for digitally certified documents. That makes it much easier to get apostilled papers from abroad. You can also apostille paper documents at JCE certification offices.
| Document Type | Issuing Authority | Apostille Available? | Translation Required? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Acta de nacimiento | JCE | Yes (JCE online or physical) | Yes |
| Acta de matrimonio | JCE | Yes | Yes |
| Cédula de identidad | JCE | Yes | Yes |
Haitian-Dominican Documentation Issues
Many Dominican document problems affect people of Haitian descent. After the 2013 Constitutional Court ruling, and the civil registration rules that followed, some people of Haitian descent born in the Dominican Republic were left stateless or without papers. If this affects you, getting a valid JCE acta de nacimiento can be harder. The JCE's Plan de Regularización and later registration programmes have helped many people. But problems remain.
Sometimes you simply cannot get the standard civil documents for a UK visa. An immigration solicitor can advise on other evidence, such as a sworn declaration (declaración jurada). If that declaration is in Spanish, it also needs a certified translation.

Frequently Asked Questions
My Dominican birth certificate was issued in the 1970s — is it still valid for UK visa purposes?
Yes. A birth certificate never expires. That said, UKVI may prefer a recent certified copy from JCE, because it confirms the current registry record. If your original is damaged, or you want the latest version, ask JCE for a new certified copy. We translate whichever copy you give us.
I have a declaración jurada (sworn declaration) instead of my acta de nacimiento — does this need translation?
Yes. A declaración jurada is a sworn declaration in Spanish. It needs a certified translation, like any other Spanish document. But be careful: UKVI does not always accept a sworn declaration in place of a civil registry document. Ask an immigration adviser whether you need extra evidence to back it up.
