Cameroonian Documents Translation for UK Visa 2026

Cameroon has two official languages, French and English. But most civil documents come from the French-speaking regions and are written in French. For a UK visa, French documents need a certified translation. Documents from the English-speaking regions may not. Both still need legalisation.

Because Cameroon is bilingual, the rules change depending on where your documents come from. The eight Francophone regions (Centre, Littoral, West, Adamawa, East, North, Far North, South) issue civil documents mainly in French. The two Anglophone regions (Northwest and Southwest) issue them in English. Both kinds need legalisation for a UK visa. Only the French ones need a certified English translation.

Key Fact: Cameroon Is Not in the Apostille Convention

Cameroon has not joined the Hague Convention of 1961. So you must legalise documents through the Cameroonian Ministry of External Relations. The UK High Commission in Yaoundé then authenticates them. This applies to documents from both Francophone and Anglophone regions.

The Anglophone Crisis and Document Availability

Since 2016, armed conflict in the Northwest and Southwest regions — the Anglophone crisis — has badly disrupted civil administration. Many registries there have been destroyed, moved, or closed off. If you come from Anglophone Cameroon, you may face these problems:

  • Birth and marriage registries in conflict areas may have burned down or been lost.
  • District Officer offices may have moved or may be running with fewer staff.
  • You may be able to get replacement documents from the central archives in Yaoundé, but it takes a long time.
  • UKVI can accept other proof when conflict makes the main documents impossible to get. You must explain this clearly in your covering letter.

Frequently Asked Questions

I am from Douala (Francophone Cameroon). My acte de naissance is in French. What do I need?

You need three things: (1) the original acte de naissance, (2) legalisation through the Ministry of External Relations in Yaoundé and then the UK High Commission in Yaoundé, and (3) a certified French-to-English translation. Do the translation last, after legalisation. That way the translator can refer to the legalised document.

I am from the Northwest region and cannot access my birth certificate due to the crisis. What can I do?

UKVI guidance accepts that conflict can make the main documents impossible to get. Give a full explanation in your covering letter. Send any other proof you have, such as hospital records, school records, or a baptism certificate. You can also include the country information (CPIN) that the UK Home Office publishes on Cameroon to back up your explanation. An immigration solicitor can advise on the best approach for your case.
