Bulgarian Documents Translation for UK Visa 2026

Bulgarian civil documents are written in Cyrillic script. They need specialist certified translation for all UK visa and EU Settlement Scheme applications. Diacritics, old socialist-era formats, and script differences all create unique translation challenges.

Bulgaria is one of the largest source countries for EU Settlement Scheme (EUSS) applications in the UK. Over 100,000 Bulgarian nationals live in the country. Bulgarian civil documents are issued in Bulgarian — a South Slavic language written only in Cyrillic script. Every document you send to UKVI or the Home Office must come with a certified English translation. This includes birth certificates, marriage certificates, national identity documents, and any other civil registry records.

Cyrillic Script Requires Specialist Translation

Bulgarian uses the Cyrillic alphabet — not the Latin alphabet used for English. Your translator must be qualified in Bulgarian, not just in general Slavic languages or Russian. Bulgarian Cyrillic differs from Russian Cyrillic in several letters. Bulgarian grammar and vocabulary are also distinct. UKVI requires the certified translator to state their qualifications. So make sure your translator can show real Bulgarian language expertise.

Акт за раждане (Birth Certificate)

The standard Bulgarian birth certificate is one page. The local Служба по гражданско състояние issues it. It records the child's full name, date and place of birth, and both parents' names. Modern certificates are usually printed on official security paper with state seals.

Акт за граждански брак (Marriage Certificate)

The civil registry issues marriage certificates after a civil ceremony. They record both spouses' details, the date of marriage, and the witnesses' names. A religious ceremony alone has no legal force in Bulgaria — only civil registration creates legal status.

Лична карта (National ID Card)

The Bulgarian national identity card shows personal details in Bulgarian. If you use the лична карта as your main identity document, many UKVI applications need it translated. This matters most for EUSS applications, where a valid Bulgarian passport or ID proves EU nationality.

Police Clearance Certificate

The Bulgarian Ministry of Justice issues the Свидетелство за съдимост (certificate of criminal record). Many settlement and skilled worker visa applications need it. The document is in Bulgarian Cyrillic and needs full certified translation.

The Служба по гражданско състояние (Civil Registry)

The Служба по гражданско състояние — the Civil Status Service — issues and keeps all Bulgarian civil documents. It works at the municipal level. Every Bulgarian municipality (община) has its own civil registry office. To get certified copies, apply to the municipality where the event was first registered. That may not be where you live now, or even where you were born if you later moved.

You can also get certified copies (заверено копие) or extracts (извлечение) through Bulgarian consulates abroad, including the Bulgarian Embassy in London. This helps Bulgarian nationals already in the UK who need documents for an EUSS application or another visa.

Bulgaria and the Apostille Convention

Bulgaria joined the Hague Apostille Convention in 2001. This means Bulgarian official documents can get an apostille to prove they are genuine for use abroad. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Sofia issues apostilles, and so do certain regional courts.

Do UKVI Applications Require an Apostille?

UKVI does not normally ask for apostilles on Bulgarian civil documents. The certified translation is the key requirement. Some applicants still get apostilles on important documents, like marriage certificates, for extra proof. For EUSS applications, you do not need an apostille. A valid certified translation of your civil registry document, plus your Bulgarian ID or passport, is enough.

EUSS Applications for Bulgarian Nationals

Bulgarian nationals who lived in the UK before 31 December 2020 can apply for EU Settlement Scheme (EUSS) status. The deadline for most applications has passed. But late applications are still accepted if you have reasonable grounds for the delay. Translating Bulgarian documents is often a key part of EUSS applications. This is especially true for family members joining EUSS holders.

Documents Typically Needed for EUSS Family Permits

  • Birth certificate (акт за раждане) — to prove family relationship
  • Marriage certificate (акт за граждански брак) — for spouse/partner applications
  • Death certificates if relevant (to prove previous marriage ended)
  • Divorce certificates if the EU citizen or family member was previously married
  • Certificate of heirs (удостоверение за наследници) for certain dependent relative applications

Diacritics and Name Preservation in Bulgarian Translations

Bulgarian names in Cyrillic must be converted into Latin letters for English translations. Bulgaria has an official transliteration standard, used for passports since 2007. It maps each Bulgarian letter to the same Latin letters every time. But mismatches are common. Older documents, passports, and records may have used different systems.

The spelling in your certified translation must match your Bulgarian passport or main identity document exactly. Your passport may show your name as "Georgi Ivanov" while an older birth certificate uses a slightly different spelling. Keep spellings consistent across documents, or explain the difference in a cover letter.

Bulgarian names follow a patronymic custom. Middle names usually come from the father's first name plus a suffix (-ов for males, -ова for females). For example, a son of "Иван" (Ivan) might have the middle name "Иванов" (Ivanov). This is standard Bulgarian naming practice, and your translator should know it.

Pre-1989 Socialist-Era Documents

Bulgaria was a socialist state (the People's Republic of Bulgaria) from 1946 to 1989. Documents from this period can cause extra problems for UK visa applications:

Different Document Formats

Pre-1989 civil documents often have different layouts, older Cyrillic typefaces, and handwritten entries. Some registry entries from the 1940s–1970s are fully handwritten in cursive Cyrillic. These are much harder to read and translate than printed documents.

State and Place Name Changes

Place names, district names, and administrative regions changed a lot after 1989. A document may list a birthplace by its socialist-era name, which differs from the modern name. Your translator should be able to spot and note these changes.

Turkish-Bulgarian Name Changes

Between 1984 and 1989, the Bulgarian socialist government forced Bulgarian Muslims and ethnic Turks to change their Turkish/Arabic names to Bulgarian Slavic names. Many people had their original names restored after 1989. This can create name mismatches between documents from different periods. A person's birth certificate may show a Turkish name while their later passport shows a Bulgarian name, or the other way round.

Condition of Documents

Very old documents may be damaged, faded, or poorly stored. Instead of the original, some applicants should get a modern certified copy (препис) from the civil registry. The copy has the same information but modern, readable formatting.

Frequently Asked Questions

My Bulgarian birth certificate uses Cyrillic script. Do I need a specialist Bulgarian translator?

Yes. Bulgarian Cyrillic differs from Russian or Serbian Cyrillic, and Bulgarian is a separate Slavic language with its own grammar. You need a translator qualified in Bulgarian, not just a general Slavic language translator. UKVI requires the certified translator to state their qualifications and confirm skill in the source language.

I have a pre-1989 Bulgarian birth certificate with handwritten entries. Can it still be translated?

Yes, but it may take a little longer. Handwritten Cyrillic from the mid-20th century needs a translator with experience in historical Bulgarian documents. If the document is very faded or damaged, get a certified modern copy (препис) from the Bulgarian civil registry instead. The copy has the same information in a modern, readable format. Bulgarian consulates in the UK can help you get one.
