Algerian Documents Translation for UK Visa 2026

Most Algerian civil documents are bilingual — Arabic and French. All need certified English translation for UKVI. Algeria is not in the Apostille Convention. So documents are authenticated by legalisation through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the UK Embassy Algiers.

Algeria has a large community in the United Kingdom. Many Algerian nationals apply for spouse visas, skilled worker visas, and family settlement. Algerian civil documents bring a special challenge. The country runs a bilingual Arabic/French civil administration, a legacy of the French colonial period and post-independence reforms. Most certificates have Arabic on one side and French on the other — or mixed text throughout. Both versions need certified English translation for UKVI.

Algeria is NOT in the Apostille Convention

Algeria has not joined the Hague Apostille Convention. So Algerian documents cannot be authenticated by apostille. Instead, they go through a legalisation chain. First the Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Ministère des Affaires Étrangères) authenticates the document. Then the UK Embassy in Algiers does. Finish this process before translation, so the certified copy you send to UKVI is fully legalised.

The DSEC: Algeria's Civil Registry Authority

The Direction des Services de l'État Civil (DSEC) runs Algeria's civil registration. It works at the wilaya (province) and commune (municipality) level. Every commune has a civil registry office. That office records births, marriages, deaths, and divorces in its area.

When getting documents from Algeria for a UK visa, ask for recent certified copies (copies certifiées conformes), not originals. Algerian consulates in the UK can help nationals abroad get civil registry extracts. This is often much faster than applying in Algeria directly.

The Livret de Famille: Algeria's Family Booklet

The livret de famille is a bilingual Arabic/French booklet. Couples get it when they register their civil marriage in Algeria. It is one of the most important documents in the Algerian civil system. It is also one of the most common documents in UK visa applications from Algeria. The livret records the marriage and the births of the couple's children. It may also record deaths and divorce.

What the Algerian Livret de Famille Contains

  • Full details of both spouses including father's name (essential in Algerian naming conventions)
  • Date, place, and reference number of the marriage registration
  • Birth entries for children — name, date, and place of birth of each child
  • Both Arabic and French text throughout (must both be translated)

Hijri Dates on Algerian Documents

Some Algerian civil documents show dates in the Islamic Hijri calendar as well as Gregorian dates. This is most common in older documents, issued before the civil administration was fully standardised. The Hijri calendar is a lunar calendar. Its year numbers differ a lot from the Gregorian system. For example, the year 1400 AH is roughly 1979–1980 CE.

Modern Algerian documents (post-1990s) mainly use Gregorian dates. The Hijri date sometimes appears as a second reference. Your certified translator will convert any Hijri dates to Gregorian dates and note the conversion in the translation.

The Carte Nationale d'Identité Biométrique Électronique (CNIBE)

The modern Algerian national identity card is the Carte Nationale d'Identité Biométrique Électronique (CNIBE). This biometric card replaced the older paper identity document. It shows the holder's full name, date of birth, and place of birth. It also has a chip with biometric data.

The text on the CNIBE is mainly Arabic, with some French. If you submit it to UKVI with a visa application, you need a certified translation of all text on the card, front and back. Note that the CNIBE is not a travel document. Algerian nationals travelling to the UK need a valid passport.

Step 1: Obtain Official Copies

Request certified copies from the Algerian municipality or the Algerian Consulate in London. Documents should be recent — issued within the last 3–6 months where possible.

Step 2: Legalisation

If legalisation is needed, documents go through the Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and then the UK Embassy in Algiers. This takes several weeks. Start well before your visa application deadline.

Step 3: Certified Translation

Send documents for certified translation by a translator qualified in both Arabic and French. Algerian documents have text in both languages throughout, so both skills are needed.

Step 4: Submit with Application

Always send the original document (or certified copy) and the certified translation together. Never send only the translation.

Legalisation Requirements for Algerian Documents

Algeria is not a member of the Hague Apostille Convention. So documents must go through a full legalisation chain before UKVI will accept them for immigration purposes. There are two stages:

1

Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs

First, the Ministère des Affaires Étrangères et de la Communauté Nationale à l'Étranger in Algeria authenticates the document. This confirms it is a genuine official record from an Algerian authority.

2

UK Embassy in Algiers

Next, the document goes to the British Embassy in Algiers for legalisation. This tells UK authorities that the Algerian MFA authentication is genuine.

UKVI does not always require legalisation for every document or visa category. But spouse and settlement applications from Algeria are more and more often asked for legalised documents. Check the rules for your visa category. Consider legalising key documents early, just in case.

Frequently Asked Questions

My Algerian birth certificate has both Arabic and French text. Do both need to be translated?

Yes. UKVI requires one certified translation of the whole document. It must cover both the Arabic and the French text — even if you can read some of the French. Your certified translator will produce one English translation covering all text, stamps, and notes from both language sections.

How long does legalisation of Algerian documents take?

The full chain (Algerian MFA plus UK Embassy) usually takes 4–8 weeks. Start well before your visa application date. The Algerian Consulate in London can help Algerian nationals in the UK get documents and advise on the legalisation process.
